"And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates....And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb... The city lies foursquare, its length the same as its width....12,000 stadia. Its length and width and height are equal... its wall, (was) 144 cubits by human measurement. The wall was built of jasper, while the city was pure gold, like clear glass. The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel... jasper.. sapphire...agate...emerald...onyx, ...carnelian...chrysolite...beryl...topaz...chrysoprase... jacinth...amethyst. And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.
And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life." (Revelation 21:10-27)
The dimensions of this heavenly city, the New Jerusalem, measure 4,800,000 cubits -- approximately 1,500 miles wide, tall and high--a gargantuan cube with multiple levels and gates which can hold innumerable inhabitants. We read the elaborate description of this jewel-trimmed city with streets and walls of pure, glasslike gold, and the temple in the city described as the Lord God Himself and the Lamb (Jesus Christ). We also see the description of the glory of the Lord providing the city with His natural, brilliant, holy light, and the only city dwellers are those who have given Christ their all, recognizing that He gave HIS all FOR all.
Statistically speaking, this description of heaven's city tops them all. As believers, we are already residents there even as we still live here in this earthly dwelling. We can longingly anticipate but can't imagine such a city of great size and beauty as it is described in Revelation because there is simply nothing on this earth that can be compared with it. Not even the Mighty Mac comes close with all its impressive statistics. Our heavenly home will not only be physically astounding and beautiful, the righteousness of God will shine there, brighter than the sun. "In the path of righteousness is life, and in its pathway there is no death." (Proverbs 12:28) Have you trusted Christ so you can dwell in this heavenly home? The Lamb's book of life contains the names of those who have placed their faith and hope in Jesus and they will praise Him for eternity!
Lord, as you call us to yourself, help us look forward with anticipation to the place where we will dwell eternally with you. While we wait, we pray that we will never lose sight of our commission here on this earth: to tell others about Jesus' sacrifice and His resurrection power! Amen
