"...if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." --Matthew 17:20
A molecule is the smallest possible amount of a particular substance that has all the characteristics of that substance. A molecule of water is the basis for a whole lake, and a molecule of oxygen is a foundation for the very air that we breathe.
Applying that concept to our spiritual lives, we can say that the basis and the foundation of our faith is Jesus. He is the spiritual molecule who possesses the characteristics of God and reveals to us the will of the Father, the heart of the Father, the love of the Father, the compassion of the Father, the grace and truth of the Father--because Jesus is the Father's Word made flesh (Jn 1:1,14). Jesus said, "He who has seen me has seen the Father," (Jn 14:9) and "I and my Father are one." (Jn 10:30) Just as all matter begins with a molecule, our faith journey begins with Jesus.
Jesus said that faith the size of a mustard seed is all that is needed to move a mountain. It only takes a small amount of faith--even a molecule of faith--to trust in Christ. A small amount of faith accomplishes great things in light of eternity because a decision to believe in Jesus secures us a place in heaven and cancels our reservation in hell. Without that faith, we are doomed to a "punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His might." (2 Thess. 1:9)
With that faith, we are promised a dwelling in a beautiful city "whose designer and builder is God" himself (Heb. 11:10), and a "crown of glory that will never fade away." (1 Pt 5:4)
Going back to the basic building block or the single molecule of our faith will always bring us back to Christ. When we are distracted by the things of this world, discouraged by the demands of life, deceived by the tricks and lies of the enemy, or defeated by our struggle with sin or our flesh, we need to get back to one basic--Jesus. Does this apply to you, today? If so, ask God for more than a molecule or a mustard seed of faith so that you might know Jesus in all His fullness, fix your eyes on Jesus in every circumstance, and love Jesus with every molecule of your heart.
Father, your Word tells us that without faith it is impossible to please you. Increase our faith so we can draw nearer to you, know Christ more intimately and reap the rewards that you promise to those who earnestly seek you. Amen.
