When you think of Mt. Everest, the first thing that probably comes into your mind is height-- and lots of it! But think higher, because God goes even beyond that height. Scripture proves it: "God is so great--higher than the heavens, higher than the farthest stars." (Job 22:12)
Physicists are now speculating that there may be far more universes than just our own, and God's greatness extends higher than the speculation of it all. The creation of heavens and multiple universes requires a scale of existence immeasurable by human standards. And since God created the heavens in their height and in their glory, they belong to Him. "To the Lord your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it." (Deuteronomy 10:14) We may explore space using our technology to name the stars and planets and constellations, but God did that before we were even created! "He counts the stars and calls them all by name." (Psalm 147:4) The marvel and wonder is that creation itself professes its Creator in the very heights of existence. "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands," (Psalm 19:1) "and the heavens proclaim His righteousness..." (Psalm 50:6).
It might be a challenge for us to try to wrap our brains around the extreme altitude of God Himself and His heavenly creation, but there's even more to the heights of God than this. "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." (Isaiah 55:8-9) "Your unfailing love, O LORD, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds." (Psalm 36:5) God's greatness is huge, His creation is infinite, His thoughts unique, His ways higher, His love is vast and His faithfulness stretches to the heavens. Everything about God professes immeasurable height, possesses unparalleled grandeur, and proclaims inconceivable power. It's beyond mind blowing, and it should be, because even with all the height and depth and breadth of everything that God creates and possesses, He still cares for us. "When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?" (Psalm 8:3-4) God is never too big to love us, never too great to ignore us, never too busy to stretch out His hand to care for us in our times of need.
Ponder His heights today. Profess God's greatness to someone else. Proclaim His grandeur so that with your breath and the breath of the heavens, His name will be praised and glorified.
Glorious God, maker of all I see and maker of me, may my praises of you reach new heights today as I ponder your greatness, your creation, your faithfulness and your love. Amen.
