-- 1 Peter 3:18
How do you think you would feel if you knew the exact day and hour that you would face your death? Relieved and peaceful? Anxious or stressed? What about if you knew exactly HOW you would die? If you knew it would be a quick, painless death, you might be okay with that. But what about a slow, excruciating, torturous, humiliating, painful death? You might feel bitter, angry or resentful. If you were given a choice, would you do it?
Jesus knew. From before creation, He knew that His purpose for coming to earth was to fulfill God's promise of a savior and redeemer for all mankind. When the Word was made flesh to dwell among us for the salvation of our souls, Jesus knew exactly when He would die, why He would die and how He would die. He recognized that death's cruelty would place Him at the mercy of His raging, merciless enemies. This was the burden Christ carried His entire life here on earth. Yet He carried Himself with humility, grace, dignity, compassion and love. No one but the Father knew the extent and the weight of the burden of the Son--to become the bridge of reconciliation and the promise of eternal life for those who confess Jesus as Lord and believe that God raised Him from the dead. When we carry our burdens every day, we often feel discouraged and overwhelmed, maybe even bitter and angry. We ask "Why?" But Christ did it all--knew His burden, carried it, and persevered to His death on the cross. When your burdens become too heavy, think of Jesus, who carried the biggest burden of all and still chose to complete His mission of redemption in spite of His burden and because of it. To Him, we were worth it all. Today, we rejoice that He is risen with the promise of eternity for those who trust in Him.
Hallelujah, what a Savior!
"Jesus said... “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live..." --John 11:25
