"And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)
Many movies and books today include a popular tag line: "Based on a true story". This gives the title an air of authenticity and creates a special appeal to those who want to know more about the reality of others' lives. One wonders then, why God's story is so often ignored. It includes gripping, even graphic accounts of wars between nations, sagas of wise leaders and ruthless kings, tender love stories and timeless tales of the battle between good and evil. It contains angels, demons and descriptions of the spiritual combat in the heavenly realms. It even describes future events! The names in God's story have not been changed to protect the innocent. There are no "actors," but rather real people who experienced the best and worst of historic times, recounting events through writing inspired by the Creator of the universe Himself. God's story is challenging, convicting and emotional, but it is not "based on" a true story-- it IS a true story, or rather THE true story. This declaration needs no tag line, since it speaks for itself: "...Your word is truth" (Jn 17:17), and "...every word of God is flawless" (Prov 30:5).
So why the lack of fascination or interest in a book that is literally "breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness?" The answer lies in the last part of the verse..."that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16-17). God's story holds no interest to worldly men because "The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him," (1 Cor 2:14). But the Lord woos those who ignore His words. "No one can come to me (Jesus) unless the Father who sent me draws them," (John 6:44). And for those who believe, are you a man or woman of God who desires training in righteousness, spiritual competency and daily equipping? Then "do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth," (2 Timothy 2:15). There's nothing like a true story to change your life--especially God's true story.
Lord God Almighty, how precious is Your holy Word to us. It breathes life into our souls, strengthens us for daily living, girds us for battle as the enemy wages war against us. God, help us to press into the truth of Your Word, allowing it to guide us, take root deep in our hearts, and change us into the image of Christ.
